Omar Sharif World Individual Championship - An individual tournament held in 1990 at Atlantic City, New Jersey with a total purse of $200,000.   The event was the first time the ACBL sanctioned a tournament offering a cash prize.  Zia Mahmood won the $40,000 first place award and Fred Hamilton came in second.  Third place winner, P.O. Sundelin narrowly slipped out of first place when his partner Peter Pender pulled a wrong card in an easy game contract (hand rotated):

  A K 5 4
8 4 3 2

10 7 6 5
J 8 4 3

Contract: 4S

Declarer: South

West led the C3 to East's Club suit, bid in a competitive auction.  Zia, playing East, played the CQ to keep communication open to partner.  Pender, playing South, mistakenly assumed Zia played the CA, and mistakenly played the C6.  The defenders now have 3 more tricks (HQ, DA, and CA) setting a fine contract, not bid by North-South at the other table.  The double whammy dropped Sundelin (North) from first to third place.
