And so we end this series with RHO opening 1 Notrump. Do you feel you have the “right stuff” to make a call? Does the fact that righty as two-fifths of the total points and you’re vulnerable concern you? Lots of luck bidding these hands!

Hand a pas, but hand b Multi Landy, not a one suiter, didn’t find that option in answers đŸ™‚
As the end of the first day of this pole, the votes are in with a clear majority sweeping the field. Those who bid 2 Hearts on hand B garnered 52 percent of the total votes, more than the some of their competitors and over 100 votes above their nearest competitor (bidding 2 Hearts on both hands). Those who passes both hands and the folks that instead only opened hand A (with more High Card Points but scattered honors) each gathered 11 percent of the total; the doublers, players bidding a two-suiter or something else were tailing just behind with 9 percent of the vote.
Apparently as our first week of bidding closed, most voters are getting the hang of evaluating tricks instead of HCP. Then again, maybe those who voted otherwise believe the majority suffers from a “group think” mentality! For the non-believers, we’ll have to wait for the dust to settle and make their own assessment the next time they get hands like these. Who was it who said, “judge not least thou be judged?” Certainly not MY partners! (wink, wink)

Can you bid 2D to show diamonds and a higher ranking suit if you use DONT?
Hello John,
.
Well, if you were inclined to make an interference call, doing so with a flattish 5-3-3-2 shape would probably not yield a favorable result. On hand B with a nice 6-4-2-1, if you’re not looking to enjoy a good premium by setting the opponents then yes, playing the DONT convention you might want to enter the auction. However a 6-4-2-1 should be played as a single suit. So instead of bidding 2D to show Diamonds and a higher ranking suit, you would make a Double to show a single-suited hand. After partner “puppets” to 2D, you would bid 2 Hearts to play in your 6 card suit. Being a minor suit, we don’t want to disclose the Club suit.
