3 Out of 5 Ain’t Bad

You don’t need 2 of the top 3 honors to open a weak two — 3 out of 5 is just fine.

Bid One More

At favorable vulnerability, try to preempt “one more” than normal.

Seven Bad is Good Enough

If the vulnerability is wrong for a preempt at the three level, open a weak two-bid.

A Major on the Side

Preempting with an outside four-card major is neither illegal nor stupid.

Eight is Enough

In first and second seat, a 4 or 4 preempt promises a weak hand with an eight-card suit.

Sock It To ’Em

Preempt in third seat as often as possible, especially when you are not vulnerable.

Last But Not Least

A fourth-seat preempt shows 9-12 HCP.

Going Nowhere

When partner preempts, you don’t have to bid just because you were dealt 13 HCP.

Feature, Schmeature

A 2NT response to a weak two-bid asks opener if he has a minimum. The “feature” issue is secondary.

Partner’s Suit or Else

When partner opens 3 or 3, forget about 3NT — either pass or raise.
